The Key to Overcoming

Note: the links in this piece are not from the author, but from some other source. We advise you not to use them. We are working on correcting this problem.

Everything begins in the mind. “As a man thinks—so is he” is still true. Many have pointed out that in every situation there are two significant elements: (1) the circumstance itself and (2) the way you think about it. Of the two, however, the second is far more important than the first.
As I write this, I am reading a book by a man who was paralyzed in his youth by polio and has had only the use of some toes on one foot throughout most of his forty plus years, and yet he has earned and has become an author who types his own manuscripts. His circumstances seem overwhelming, but because of the way he came to think about them, he has been able to overcome.
The point is that overcoming never happens without a mind change. Overcoming involves facing certain circumstances that would appear to be formidable enough to stop us, but then experiencing a mind change that enables us to push through, climb over, or in some other way, move on to do the will of God.
As I have faced my challenges, I have come to believe that in every situation there is a right and spiritual way to think that will enable us to overcome whatever challenge we are facing.  In every situation (no matter how difficult it may be), we can experience “a mind change” from wrong and unspiritual thinking to right and spiritual thinking. Now, it may take some struggle to get to this point, but once the right kind of thinking is at work within our minds, we are well on our way to overcoming our circumstances.

Focus Scriptures

Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace. (Romans 8:5–6)

Therefore I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer yourselves as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. (Romans 12:1–2a)

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set you hearts on things above where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. (Colossians 1:1–2)

  1. I needed to read this as I struggle to come to the grips with some family issues. It reminds me that I can control my thoughts and that this too can be used to glorify God and His kingdom.
