Do everything without complaining and arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life (Philippians 2:14-16a).
Against such a backdrop, true
disciples of Jesus are as evident as stars on the darkest of nights. The expression of the sinful nature that Paul
focused on eradicating in the lives of the Philippians was a complaining,
murmuring, argumentative attitude. This
is key. He called the disciples to do a
heart check. The one writing from a
Roman prison displayed no trace of such a negative response. If anyone might have been excused for complaining,
murmuring or arguing, it would have been Paul.
The fact that he did not spoke a powerful message ¾and
still does.
When the weather is lousy and we
don’t complain; if someone insults us and we don’t insult them in return; when
our employer asks us to do a task we don’t enjoy and we don’t mutter under our
breath as he walks away; as our teacher gives an assignment and we don’t whine
with the others, we shine like stars in a self-centered universe.
Matthew 11:12
ReplyDeleteFrom the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it.
Thank you for being two of them, Tom and Sheila.
Much love,
Curtis
What a great reminder on a Monday morning. We can shine just by trusting God is looking out for us, so there is no need to argue or complain. Imagine our inspiration this week if we put this into practice!
ReplyDeleteGrumbling and complaining really bother me, and the world is full of this. It has become so common place that, for example, at a football game I was at on Saturday, no matter how many good plays in a row our team made, some of the fans behind me instantly whined when the team made a bad play. We truly do shine as stars in a dark world when, despite every inclination in our sinful nature to bellyache about our challenges or even slight discomfort, we deny ourselves and serve the Lord with a grateful, outwardly-focused attitude. This is a true gift from God. Thank you for this reminder on the first full week back to work in 2013 Tom and Shelia! It was wonderful seeing you both again yesterday!

Amen Tom. Thank you for your words brother. We still live in a crooked and deprived generation. LORD help us to shine brightly in a dark place. "encourage one another daily"
