The Choice is Yours

“Do you believe in God?” Steve Kroft asks J. Craig Venter on a recent edition of 60 Minutes. “No,” answered Venter.  He is a world famous microbiologist.  After a lackluster time in undergraduate school he somehow went on to get a Ph.D. and now is considered one of the leading scientists in the world, having described the first genome, mapped the complete human genome, and now having created the first synthetic cells with man-made DNA.  Kroft goes on to describe Venter as one known by his peers as a brilliant man with an out-sized ego.

After he replied to Kroft’s question Venter added: "I believe the universe is far more wonderful than just assuming it was made by some higher power. I think the fact that these cells are software-driven machines, [and] that software is DNA and…truly the secret of life is writing software is pretty miraculous…pretty stunning."

Back on June 26, 2000, Venter had stood beside President Bill Clinton to announce the completion of the mapping of the human genome. On the other side of Clinton that day was an equally famous scientist, Francis Collins, who is given as much credit as Venter for the project. Later Collins would write a book titled The Language of God, making it known why he believes the 3.1 billion letters in the human genome supports his conviction about God’s reality and his commitment to Jesus.

So there you have it: Two acclaimed scientists carefully studying some of the most astonishing facts about human life, both saying it is all stunning and even miraculous. But one says he does not believe there is a God who wrote the software and the other says he does.

Quite interesting. No matter how much we learn, we all have the same simple choice, and one that will guide our lives for the rest of our lives.

  1. Great article, Tom!
Very convincing... As a former atheist, I am glad to have made the right choice.

  2. WOW, you are so right. A great testimony about we all see nature, beauty, and miraculous occurences in our life and one can call it science and the other call it GOD! Makes me so grateful that I am looking through the God/Jesus eye glasses.

  3. This is fantastic.
I would definitely would rather live as if there is a God and find out that he does not exist than to live as if there IS NO GOD and find out that he does exist.
thank you for seeing both ways. God is GREAT!

  4. Thank you Tom. Yes, we always have a choice (even if it is limited). Good point Annie.
My Dad is an Engineer by trade, scientific in thinking, and very confused standing on sandy ground of "Their might be a God". He use to be a disciple, it's very sad for he is not a happy man. Please pray for him and all those who are so confused, may they find true freedom in Christ.

  5. In my qt today:
    Isaiah 29:
10The LORD has brought over you a deep sleep:
    He has sealed your eyes (the prophets);
he has covered your heads (the seers).

11 For you this whole vision is nothing but words sealed in a scroll. And if you give the scroll to someone who can read, and say, “Read this, please,” they will answer, “I can’t; it is sealed.” 12 Or if you give the scroll to someone who cannot read, and say, “Read this, please,” they will answer, “I don’t know how to read.”
I was thinking no matter what if we dont hold to the teaching we CANNOT know the truth and be set free!

  6. Your article illustrates that we all have to face God on our own terms. We cannot point to someone else's faith (or lack of) as evidence for why we do or don't believe, since it is not the facts that cause or prevent faith, but what we do with them.

  7. Proof in point that man's thinking does become futile when they fail to give thanks to God and acknowledge Him. Romans 1
